Description
Liatris Spicata is a stunning, easy to grow hardy Summer flowering cormous perennial, commonly known as Blazing Star. This tall growing plant can reach a height of up to 70cm and produces narrow foliage and clusters of intense lavender coloured bottlebrush like flowers from July to September. This unusual clump forming flowering plant is pollinator friendly attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects to your garden and has been awarded the RHS Plant for Pollinators seal of approval.
Plant these liatris bulbs in the Spring in fertile, well draining soil in a warm sunny sheltered spot. These corms should be planted 15 cm deep and between 10 and 20 cm apart. After planting, water well and water about once a week during the growing season. After flowering, remove the flower stems, leaving the leaves intact. The leaves can then be cut back in Autumn.
These bulbs are great for growing in flower beds, garden borders or in patio pots. They can also be used as cut flowers allowing you to enjoy them in your home and garden. Liatris looks great, when planted along with other purple and blue coloured plants in particular Festuca Grass, Echinacea, Lavender and Allium. If you are not ready to plant bulbs now, then store them in a cool, dry, frost free, well ventilated location.
