Description
Magnolia ‘Leonard Messel’ is one of those plants that really feels special when it comes into flower. In early spring, the deep purple buds slowly open into soft lilac-pink blooms with long, slender petals, giving it a light, elegant look. There’s also a gentle fragrance to the flowers, which adds to the whole experience when you’re out in the garden.
It’s a generous bloomer too, often putting on a good display even when it’s still quite young, so you don’t have to wait years to enjoy it. The flowers usually appear around March to April, just when everything else is starting to wake up.
This variety stays fairly compact compared to other magnolias, which makes it a really good fit for smaller gardens. Over time, it will grow into a tall shrub or small tree, but it keeps a nice, manageable shape rather than getting out of hand.
It’s also quite easy-going when it comes to where you plant it. It’s happy in a sunny spot but will also do well in partial shade, so it can fill those slightly tricky areas where not everything thrives.
