Description
Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ is the most well-known Coral Bark Maple, celebrated for its striking coral pink to red stems that bring colour and interest to the garden throughout the year. This distinctive bark colour makes it one of the most recognisable and sought-after Japanese maples.
In spring, the tree produces pink young growth alongside deeply lobed foliage in warm yellow and orange tones. As the season progresses, the leaves mature to a lush green in summer, before turning a soft, glowing yellow in autumn, providing beautiful seasonal transitions.
‘Sango-kaku’ is particularly valued as a winter feature, when the coral-red bark on its younger shoots and branches becomes even more prominent once the leaves have fallen. Its outstanding ornamental qualities have been recognised by the Royal Horticultural Society, which has awarded it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit, confirming its reliability and garden performance.
